1. Inspect the car’s paper immediately

 Check the present insurance papers of the second-hand automobile you want to buy. You have to know if the car has had any accidents or claims associated with those. Check the engine range and car’s framework thoroughly. Match the registration papers before you purchase a second-hand automobile.

Check all the filters of the second-hand automobile, and make sure to change them if possible. All filters (air, fuel, oil) want regular cleanup and oiling. Failing to do this could affect the performance of the automobile considerably. If nothing else, this can be a way to check how well the car has been maintained. Check the brakes of the pre-owned automobile. Drive the automobile at 40-50 kmph in an area that has very little to no traffic. Make sure to bring out any vibration or any strange and high noise from the car. Brakes that do not work correctly might mean that the car wants a replacement.

Examine the tires properly. Check the condition of all the tires of your automobile. They must be worn equally and may match. Check the hood for signs of injury, dents, or rust – they are signs of a poorly maintained automobile or a previously broken one.

2.   Transfer the Registration Certificate (RC)

For this, you should fill out and submit forms number 29 and 30, issued by the RTO in the authority you live in. If the automobile is registered in a very different authority from yours, then an          operative from that authority’s RTO can facilitate the transfer.

After submission, the local RTO initiates the transfer. You will receive a receipt within 15-18 days and, therefore, the name-changed RC copy by the 40th-45th day. Meanwhile, copies of those forms or the receipt work as proof of dealings. 

If shopping for a pre-owned car bought by the previous owner on finance, make sure that you get the first bill for the car. Further, get the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the automobile non-depository financial institution.

3. Insurance

There are three ways to get second-hand automobile insurance in your name:

  1. A name modification in the previous owner’s policy
  2. A brand new policy
  3. Previous owner contract

4. Transfer of No Claim Bonus (NCB)

NCB is given to both insured and not insured vehicles.  Hence, on the transfer of the car, the policy is transferred to the new owner, however, not the NCB. The new owner should pay the difference on account of the NCB for the balance policy amount. The first owner will, however, use the NCB on a brand new vehicle purchased by him.

It suggests that if you are transferring the policy from the previous owner, he has an NCB discount on the policy. This cannot be transferred to you. Suppose you have had a car in the past, and a no claim bonus discount is applicable. In that case, the previous insurance company you want the policy with will have to issue an NCB reserving letter to you that is valid for three  years from the time the last policy ends.

You can use this letter and apply this discount to the new policy you get or alter the pro-rated quantity, just in case of transferring the previous owner’s policy in your name. Note that if your NCB quantity is more extensive than your sellers’, you may not get a refund. So even from the NCB purpose of reading, you should get a brand new policy anew, in your name.
